Altrincham is known for its vibrant transformation from a historic market town to a modern foodie and cultural hub. When visiting the City, you’ll have fun exploring the area’s many venues and lovely outdoor spaces. And it’s easy to do, since Altrincham is just 20 minutes from Manchester city centre by tram. Check out this great roundup of nearby activities:

Explore the Town Centre

Altrincham Market & Market House – A must-visit foodie destination with local stalls, artisan producers and plenty of street-food options. It’s regularly listed among the UK’s best food markets, bringing together independent traders and hosting community events. Full markets are on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with specific days for farmers’ produce (Fridays) and thrift/antiques (Thursdays).

Stamford Quarter – A mix of high-street shops and boutique retailers, perfect for shopping and browsing before a bite to eat. Our favourites include Marks & Spencer’s and Rudy’s Pizza.

Enjoy the pedestrianised Goose Green area for cafés, bars, and restaurants, and soak in the friendly local atmosphere. Nearby, you will find Mabel’s Tea Rooms, a cozy cafe with delicious scones, Victoria Sponge cake,  sandwiches, and friendly service.

Parks and Outdoor Walks

Stamford Park – A large Victorian park with shaded areas and an ornamental pond. The park boasts plenty of sports courts and pitches, as well as a bowling green and play area. When visiting, stroll to the nearby King George V Pool to watch the ducks and swans.

John Leigh Park – Visit the park for its diverse areas for different ages, sports facilities like tennis and basketball, aviary, and peaceful gardens. Close to the city centre.

Bridgewater Canal – Enjoy peaceful walks or cycling along the towpath. We especially like the walk from Oldfields to Dunham Massey. Stop by the Rope & Anchor or Swan with Two Nicks for a pint.

Denzel Gardens and Adjacent Devisdale – Take in the beautiful, well-maintained grounds with varied sections like a sunken garden and ornamental garden. Wander the paths and enjoy a picnic while relaxing near the historic Denzel House. If you simply want to de-stress amidst nature, check out this author’s favorite spot just next door. The Devisdale is an expansive green area.

Dunham Massey – National Trust estate with a historic hall, deer park, and beautiful gardens. The grounds are free to traverse but you’ll pay for parking and to enter the house and gardens. The 17th-century house, home to an extensive collection that spans throughout its history, is open to visitors from March to October.

Altrincham Garrick Playhouse – Check out this local theatre with strong amateur and touring productions.

Catch a Film at Everyman Cinema Altrincham -For a more luxurious cinema experience, Everyman Altrincham offers stylish seating, food and drinks brought to your seat, and a carefully curated mix of new releases and classic films. It’s a popular evening spot and ideal for date nights.
