Welcome to the Photo Gallery section of the Ruschtotheoutdoors Blog. Please check out our other pages in the Gallery as well as various blog articles. Now onto the Beaches of New York…
New York State boasts over 1800 miles of shoreline. Locals and out-of-towners flock to the state’s many beaches that stretch from South Beach (near Staten Island) to Montauk Point (on Long Island.) But if you visit, don’t forget to check out the wide, sandy beaches of Fire Island. These gems of nature offer some of the best swimming and sunbathing spots close to New York City.
In the meantime, tour our virtual gallery to discover the state’s loveliest beaches. Check back often. We’ll regularly update this page in order to help you visualize yourself relaxing by the water’s edge!
Fire Island/ US National Seashore
Fire Island, a 30-mile long barrier island, runs beneath the south shore of Long Island. The area of this windswept landform may just be 9.6 square miles, but the shoreline seems endless! Many portions of the island (but not all) are accessible only by boat, water taxi, or ferry. However, beautiful beach towns, like Davis Park and Ocean Beach, are certainly worth a visit. My favorite beaches include Watch Hill and Sailor’s Haven. Note that most of the island is managed by the Fire Island National Seashore; a unit of the National Park Service
Robert Moses State Park Beach/ Caren Milheron
The Robert Moses State Park is located on the western end of Fire Island, outside the Fire Island National Seashore boundary.
At 168 feet, The Fire Island Lighthouse at the Park stands at 168 feet and is the tallest on Long Island. After climbing 182 steps, you can actually see the NYC skyline. Pack your beach gear, load up the kids, and drive to the beach via the Robert Moses Causeway.

Jones Beach State Park is located on a barrier island off the coast of southern Nassau County, Long Island. From the Park, it’s just a 38-mile drive to New York City. As you can imagine, the beach is popular with the residents of the City. I find the beach to be too crowded for my taste, so an early or late visit may be best.
The Park offers 6.5 miles of white-sand beach, a boardwalk with concession stands, adventure park, miniature golf, theatre, and much more.
