North Carolina is bursting with natural attractions. Cascading waterfalls, sandy beaches, hardwood forests, and coastal plains, dot the landscape outside the urban regions. But if you’ve visited the Tarheel state, you probably know that the region also boasts a number of beautiful mountains. In fact, North Carolina is home to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Great Smoky Mountains, and part of the Appalachian Mountain Range. Mount Mitchell, located in the Black Mountains of the Appalachian Range, is the tallest at 6,684 feet. If you visit the central or western part of the state, you’ll have a number of summits to pick from.

Stone Mountain, Pilot Mountain, and Hanging Rock are popular mountains to visit. They are located in the central part of the state and are an easy 2-to-21/2 hour drive from the city of Raleigh. All are located within a North Carolina state park. Stone Mountain and hanging Rock State Parks have the added feature of beautiful waterfalls!

Grandfather Mountain, pictured below, is both a mountain and a state park located near Linville, North Carolina. The popular mountain is part of the Blue Ridge range and the highest ridge on the range’s eastern side. The majestic Grandfather Mountain rises to 5,946 feet and is approximately 300 million years old!
